CONDOLENCE: SHOGO KUBO

 Pioneering skateboarder Shogo Kubo, 54, dies while paddle boarding alone in Hawaii

• Kubo, a married father, was pulled to shore by witnesses who saw him struggling in the water off the coast of Hawai'i Kai, Honolulu on Tuesday
• He could not be revived and was pronounced dead
• He had been an original member of the Zephyr surf shop's Z-Boys, which was formed in Venice, California in 1975
• The team are credited with inspiring a new wave of skateboarders with their never-before-seen tricks
• They starred in a 2001 documentary, which was turned into a 2005 movie starring Heath Ledger and Emile Hirsh, 'Lords of Dogtown'

Shogo Kubo, for those who do not know, was one of the most stylish and flowing pool and half pipe riders you'd ever see. He was reported died while paddle boarding by himself off the coast of Hawai'i Kai, Honolulu. Kubo, 54, passed away on Tuesday after witnesses saw him struggling in the water in an area known as 'Seconds' off Portlock Point and people swam out to bring him to the shore, authorities said.

The 7th annual Monsoon Mayhem International Surf Challenge returns to Desaru Beach in Malaysia from 4-6 January 2013 as a 2-star Asian Surfing Championship event, which will draw both professional and amateur surfers from all over South East Asia including Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan to compete for the $14,000 MYR ($4,600 USD) in total prize money and ASC championship points, and just to have heaps of fun at this unique event.

Located just east of Johor Baru in Malaysia and the closest surfing beach to Singapore, Desaru Beach is a white sand strip of beachbreak that can offer up peaceful glassy conditions as well as thumping closeouts during the monsoon season, so what will be on offer each year is anybody’s guess. Mother Nature is a fickle beast and each year does her best to make sure that the event lives up to its “Mayhem” moniker.

There will be surfing competitions in four categories, Men’s Open, Women’s Open Masters (35 years of age and older), and Bodyboard), as well the Slide Jam Longboarding Competition, which saw tremendous success last year and is expected to draw skaters from all over Malaysia and Singapore to compete for the $1,000 RM first place prize.

The competition will be held from 4th to 6th January 2012 and the competitors will be competing for an overall cash prize of over MYR 10000. The 7th Monsoon Mayhem is organized by Bigfoot Industries sanctioned by Asian Surfing Championship. It represents the 3rd stop on the Asian Surfing Championship tour. Last year’s competition drew participants from Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia,USA.Japan and Australia. In 2012 the participation has already been confirmed from the majority of South East Asian countries and we are looking forward to extend this invitation to you.

GREG NOLL TRAVEL WELL SKATEBOARDS BY ELEMENT

This is old but i decided to post it up here since a lot of kids still asking what is longboard; the history and connection with skateboard (so-called short/ trick board).

On January 26, 2010, surfers and skateboarders alike gathered in San Clemente, California to celebrate the release of a collaboration between surfing legend Greg Noll and Element called Travel Well— a line of three complete skateboards that each represent an era in Noll’s history.

Element Skateboards and Noll Worldwide teamed up to create a line of custom skateboards.

The Travel Well Greg Noll Collection captured the history of the surf icon’s big wave surfing and innovative board shapes with five iconic boards shaped exclusively for Element, each representing a specific chapter in Noll’s history. Noll is famous for hand shaping and selling the first mass marketed skateboard from his Hermosa Beach shop in 1958, and all five decks display graphics that mirror iconic art from Greg’s storied past.

The Greg Noll Collection captured the artistry and spirit of Greg and Jed Noll, and cements their reputation as essential contributors to surf and skate culture.

"Greg Noll helped pioneer our industry. The Noll brand is an authentic reminder of that and his great contributions to both surfing and skateboarding." commented Johnny Schillereff, Founder and President of Element Skateboards. LARRY STEVENSON: R.I.P

On March 25th, 2012, Larry Stevenson, Skateboard Hall of Famer and founder of Makaha Skateboards, passed away passed at the age of 81. In the late 1950s Larry Stevenson was a lifeguard at Venice Beach and saw a the potential in skateboarding. At the time a skateboard was nothing more then a roller skate nailed to 2×4. He took the basic concept behind the skateboard and took it to the next level with the addition of clay wheels and a surfboard inspired design.

He used the popularity of surfing to bring skateboarding to new heights. In 1965 Larry was producing over 2,000 skate boards a day and almost every kid who surfed or wanted to surfed owned one. In 1969 he patented the kick tail design, which would forever chance the sport as we know it. Like many innovators he was way ahead of the times. It took nearly 20 years for his twin kick tail design to catch on.

For those new to skateboarding or don’t know who Larry Stevenson is, he is the creator of “kicktails” or what today’s skaters call the “nose” and “tail” of a skateboard. His ingenious invention paved the way for tricks like the “ollie” and revolutionized skateboarding. Larry also organised the world’s first skateboarding contest, set up the first skateboarding exhibition team, created the first longboard and publisher of Surf Guide and Poweredge Magazines
